Richard Thompson’s Guernsey

An exhibition of paintings by local artist Richard Thompson
Guernsey Picture Framer’s Art Gallery, Oatlands
From 3rd – 30th November 2010

Make your way to Oatlands, park in the spacious car park and you’ll soon find yourself drawn to the Gallery and into Richard Thompson’s personal view of Guernsey.

After a manic career as a marketing executive in London advertising and sales promotion agencies Richard was finally tempted to leave it all behind. In 1988 he and his Guernsey born wife Jan moved to the island that had become like a second home as a result of annual visits since they were married.

After ten enjoyable years absorbing the local business scene working for local advertising agency Wallace Barnaby he finally retired and was able to spend more time indulging the creative impulses frustratingly denied to him during his career.

One stimulant was membership and recent Presidency of the Sarnia Arts & Crafts Club.

Weekly club painting sessions and his own enthusiasm to explore new media has resulted in a wide range of work embracing his first love oil painting, then moving on to line and wash watercolour, acrylic and recently pastels. His advertising background is perhaps an influence as there is nothing wishy-washy about his style. His paintings are strong in line and colour and yet sympathetic to the Guernsey environment. The clear pure light in the Islands also influences his palette.

It is interesting to find some of his early ‘holiday’ paintings from the seventies tucked in amongst the more recent work. These add a touch of nostalgia to the exhibition.

A move into prints has widened the appeal of Richard’s paintings He does his own printing using paper designed specifically for digital/inkjet printing but with the texture and look of watercolour paper. These have proved very popular with visitors and locals looking for modestly priced gifts or souvenirs. For this exhibition he has produced larger A4 versions, double mounted and sized to fit standard frames. Holding the exhibition at the Guernsey Picture Framer’s gallery means of course that buyers can easily customise their framing on the spot.

This is the latest exhibition of local artists’ work to be held at the Oatlands Gallery this year thanks to the commendable initiative of Glen Irven the owner, a successful photographer in his own right.

The dearth of exhibition space with good parking facilities and easy access means that Glen’s gallery offers local amateur artists the perfect venue to showcase their work.

Richards exhibition is open to the public until 30th November. If you would like further information about the exhibition please email Richard.
