Lyndsey Longson

I'm Lyndsey Longson, a self-taught artist based in Guernsey, working under the name Lula Long Art.

My work is mostly portraiture, built up in layers of pastel and/or coloured pencil. I love chiaroscuro, figures emerging from darkness, where light and shadow create drama and depth. People sometimes describe my work as close to hyperrealism, but that isn't quite what I'm after. I aim for the detail of realism, with a glow or spark that comes from working by hand. Up close you see the tiny strokes and dots of colour. Step back and they resolve into skin, light and expression. I bring warmth and a bit of myself to each piece I create.

Music is a huge inspiration, from international bands to Guernsey's own grassroots rock scene. I also take on portrait commissions and have been exploring subjects closer to home, including the island's landscape and heritage.
