Guernsey Arts are thrilled to celebrate sculptor Ted McDonaugh, in his first solo exhibition after decades of skilfully creating abstract pieces from stone. 'Shapes and Shadows' will be on display at the Greenhouse Gallery from 5th July until 18th August.
Meticulously hand carved from Caen Limestone, Ted's work each has its own distinctive interactions with the light when focused upon. Shapes and Shadows are built onto the stone as each sculpture is viewed in the round. Traditional techniques combine with conceptual thought processes in this unique and exciting exhibition.
"When you look at my work, do not ask 'What is it?', because it may not have had a definitive purpose.
Much of my work is generated through the use of light and shade and may appear quite different when rotated in the light.
The stone used is Caen Limestone from St. Josephs Church which was constructed mid 19th Century. This stone has also been partially used in other notable buildings such as Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.
One or two pieces may show original moulding shapes from when it was in use holding a stained glass window. Others may show deep cuts which were the Masons Marks by which an individual’s work could be recognised, my own monogram, a combination of an E & M can be found on each piece." - Ted McDonaugh
