This memoir tells of childhood in Alderney during the German Occupation through the eyes of Mavis, a member of the Pope family - the only family to remain on the island throughout. She recalls an unusual childhood with freedom to play and no school, set amid German troops and the brutal treatment of slave workers. Illustrated with family photographs and the author’s paintings, Mavis, now 87, shares her story for the first time.
