The Kosovo War (1998-1999) was the last of the
Yugoslav Wars.
Fought between Yugoslav government forces
– police, army, paramilitaries – and the ethnic
Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), the war
crimes committed, mainly by the security forces,
shocked the world at the time and continue to be
vividly remembered in Kosovo.
They included indiscriminate massacres, revenge
killings, the murder of children and the elderly,
sexual violence, the destruction and theft of
property, and torture. More than 10,000 civilians
died during the war, about three times the
number of combatant deaths.
In the Blackbird’s Fields documents the sites of
some of those atrocities, with many now fading
into the background of everyday life, as a call to
remembrance and reflection.
