The GAC’s motto is ‘Celebrating the Power of the Arts’. As I take over as interim chair, I want this to evolve into ‘Increasing the Power of the Arts’ – both an increase in the numbers of those that participate in the arts and an increase in the standards that are achieved by those that take part in the arts.
I am enthused by the response from the trustees, commissioners and GAC’s full time staff to the plan for the year ahead that has already been presented to them. One of the main traits of the plan is that the GAC will look outwards, more than inwards, in the future. I will be actively engaging with everybody in the local arts community in the months ahead. If you want to contact me before I contact you, please call or email so that we can have a chat about my ideas and, more importantly, your ideas on how we can increase the power of the arts together.
On behalf of the GAC, the Culture and Leisure Department and the people of Guernsey, I would like to use this opportunity to pay tribute to Tony Gallienne who has recently stood down as our chair. Our island is fortunate that we have many people who commit large chunks of their ‘spare time’ to further the third sector and Tony is a classic case in point. Tony’s commitment to the GAC was exemplar and has been one of the main reasons that we have developed in the right direction over the last five years. As I take over the reins, a huge thank you Tony from all of us!
I am really looking forward to Paul Staples’ exhibition in the greenhouse when it opens over the Easter weekend. Our paths have crossed in the past and I have always been impressed by Paul’s ability, regardless of how large or, more often, how small the budget is, to create an incredible impact. Seeing his designs turn from pencil concepts to reality at close quarters was a real privilege.
