For our 2011 Christmas exhibition in the greenhouse we have teamed up with Guernsey Post to bring you four decades of Guernsey’s Christmas stamp designs in an exhibition called Post-Christmas, opening on Friday 18th November (with a private opening the previous evening).
Every year since 1970 Guernsey Post has commissioned a series of stamps to coincide with Christmas. These stamps have gained a following from collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
Post-Christmas will include the original artwork from some of the stamps commissioned over the last 41 years as well as examples of the final stamps that were used on countless Christmas cards over the years.
The works range in subject from both religious and secular scenes of Christmas to landscape photographs and paintings of festive plants and flowers.
The exhibition will also include the 2011 Guernsey set Winter Wonderland, which features photography of local landmarks in the snow earlier in the year. The photos were chosen from an open competition for all levels of photographer with the top 7 going forward to create the final stamps. These include scenes of L’Ancresse, St Peter’s Church and La Coupée.
The Alderney set of 2011 Christmas Stamps, entitled An Alderney Winter Wonderland, will also be included in the exhibition featuring a set of photographs of Alderney locations digitally enhanced to give them a festive fantasy feel.
The exhibition is part of our ongoing Design Matters series which explores how art and design factor into everyday life.
The exhibition opens on Friday 18th November 2011 (with a private opening the previous evening) and runs until 31st January 2012.
