Photomarathon – A competition with a twist!

Announcing the first ever Guernsey Photomarathon!  Taking place on Bank Holiday Monday 3 May from 10.30am to 4.30pm as part of the Guernsey Photography Festival.

This is a photography competition with a twist: In 6 hours you have to take 12 pictures on 12 given topics. The conditions of the competition state entrants are allowed one shot per topic, therefore digital cameras are not allowed, entrants will be provided with a special camera or film.  It’s not your physical condition, but your sense of improvisation, fun and creativity that is tested throughout the Photomarathon.

Why Enter?

The Guernsey Photomarathon will be a great way for friends, families and individuals to join together and get creative.  Of course the more competitive of you may wish to strike out alone and push your individual creativity to the max.

Who Can Enter?

The Photomarathon is open to anyone with a 35mm film camera (SLR, compact or disposable)

You are free to use flash guns, tripods, filters or any other related equipment. The only limits are the single film, the 6 hours and your own creativity.

Children under 18 are welcome to take part in this event; however parents and carers will be contacted by the GAC on receipt of your registration form for written consent.  Please note that the GAC takes no responsibility for the supervision of under 18s during this event and would therefore recommend that children under the age of 14 are accompanied by an adult.

The Day Itself

The headquarters for this year’s Guernsey Photomarathon will be the greenhouse gallery at the Guernsey Information Centre (previously the Tourist Information Centre).

Registration begins on Monday 3rd at 10.00am and then at 10.30am each entrant receives their film or disposable camera and the first set of 4 topics. They have the next two hours to shoot one image per topic, in the same order as the topics are listed. Two hours later at 12.30pm the next set of topics are released. Each entrant must personally collect the set of topics from the HQ, and have their entry card stamped to prove attendance. This process is repeated again at 2.30pm. The HQ will then receive the completed entries from 3.30pm until 6.00pm

The topics are kept secret until revealed every two hours. They will offer plenty of room for interpretation and creativity, more important than the technical perfection of the pictures is the creativity and imagination in interpreting the topics.

After the day of the Photomarathon, all the films are processed and printed, before our panel of judges meet to decide the winners.
