Guernsey has a rich literary past with great works such as Les Miserables being penned on its shores, and new contemporary writers now exhibiting their work through the Poems on the Buses initiative. If you’re a budding writer who perhaps has been inspired to put pen to paper then the latest event from the Guernsey Arts Commission is for you.
‘Louder Than Words’ is a one day event which invites local playwrights to a workshop with an award-winning contemporary British playwright. The workshop will de-mystify the basic principles of plot structure, character and dialogue, explored in ways that helps each individual discover and develop their own identity as a writer; signposting ways to develop working processes that help express ideas clearly in order to create powerful, exciting scripts for stage.
At the helm is experienced writer and director Rikki Beadle-Blair. Rikki was born in Bermondsey and brought up by his single mother, Monica. The BBC programme “Nationwide” made a feature on him when he was 12. His writing career has included works for television, film and stage, with his film and subsequent stage play ‘FIT’ winning a London Film Festival award. Rikki is also an actor and director so brings with him a wide variety of experiences from both sides of the script. His production company, Team Angelica, has recently finished shooting a film, ‘Bashment’, and other stage and screen works are in development.
‘Louder Than Words’ is suitable for all levels or writers from beginners to more experienced writers who are looking for a refresher session, as Community Arts Development Officer Laura Simpson explains: “There’s a story in everyone, so the saying goes. I’m so excited that we will have the opportunity to work with Rikki Beadle-Blair, a truly inspirational writer, who will help anybody craft their story. Playwriting is quite a specific skill, but given the vast theatrical talent on the island, I think we’ll have some fantastic work produced.”
The event will take place on Sunday 5th December between 10am – 4pm (Venue TBC). Spaces are limited and therefore all participants must register in order to take part. There is a cost of £35 / £25 (concessions) to join the workshop, which promises to be an exciting, creative and informative day.
