The Guernsey Sinfonietta present their annual concert at St James on Saturday 30th July with support from the Guernsey Arts Commission.
The concert, entitled Pictures of Russia, will feature music from Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky and is being described as an “explosive festival of Russian masterworks” by the organisers.
They continue: “Tchaikovsky’s famous 1812 Overture opens the programme, its dramatic and rousing finale complete with a volley of cannon fire and chimes.
“Hugely exciting young pianist Tom Hicks then makes his concerto debut with the orchestra, performing Rachmaninoff’s often-neglected Piano Concerto no. 1. A work filled with lyricism and fire in equal measure, this demanding concerto is sure to showcase the exquisite technique of one of Guernsey’s finest young musicians.
“Ravel’s colourful orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition completes the programme, with its large-scale orchestration culminating in the triumphant Great Gate of Kiev.
“Under the baton of Sebastian Grand, this dynamic orchestra has already gained a reputation for its exceptionally exciting concerts. This is an evening not to be missed.”
The concert has been supported by the Guernsey Arts Commission, Aurigny, Butterfield Bank, BWCI and Rothschild.
