The Bleeding Veil: An Exhibition by Etienne Marquis

Past and present, tales and truths, step into the bleeding veil that holds these worlds together.

This exhibition features a wide collection of oil paintings by Etienne Marquis. These include both his portrait work as well as a newly unveiled collection of paintings exploring stories of local folklore. Inspired by the masters of paintings past, Etienne channels their techniques and perspective in his depiction of contemporary figures and stories. This branching of the past and present is also alive in his newest body of work which is a contemporary rendition of old time folk stories.

In this collection of folklore, Etienne has worked with a number of locals who modelled the figures, choreographed dances for and provided in depth sources of information for this archive of our collective history.

Visiting the exhibition you can hope to see some familiar faces and locations from the mystical monoliths of Dolmens and Fairy Rings to the bay of Petit-Bot and the rocky cliffs of Pleinmont.

Etienne Marquis is a Guernsey based artist whose work explores the twisted and visionary world of contemporary surrealism through the medium of oil paints. His hands-on techniques derives from traditional 16th century process of the old masters which are utilissed to portray the contemporary contexts of his work.

A marriage of the old and new. His work embodies a gateway between the physical realm and that of the mind alongside the sifting landscapres of his upbringing in the Channel Islands and his explorations on the Cornish Coast. After graduating from Falmouth University in 2024, Etienne has gone on to exhibit work in galleries throughout Cornwall, London and the Channel Islands. Some of the most notable being the Woolf Gallery as part of The Graduate Arts Show, Gallerie V as the winner of the De Reus Foundation art prize and the Exhibitionist Hotel where he won the Art Gemini prize.

Etienne was also shortlisted for the Visual Artist Association’s upcoming Artist of the year awards and has been cited in a number of publications including T’Art, the Ouch Collective and Cista Arts.
