COLLECTIONS: Private – Opening 2nd July at the greenhouse

COLLECTIONS: Private exhibition at the greenhouse at Candie Museum
Open Wednesday 2nd July until Sunday 31st August 2014

The next exhibition opening, to the public, at the greenhouse at Candie Museum on Wednesday 2nd July is the first in a series of exhibitions called COLLECTIONS which will look at different ways of collecting while exploring the passion behind acquiring works of art. For the inaugural show the Guernsey Arts Commission is focusing on COLLECTIONS: Private and all the works in the exhibition are drawn from on-island collectors, with a focus on prints and multiples. The exhibition spans a late-in-life series of lithographs by Picasso, goes via Germany to Beuys, Rome to Twombly, nearer to home with a work from Damien Hirst’s first print series for the Millennium, and on to Guernsey’s very own David Robilliard. But indeed all these artists are internationally recognised and have global reach through, in part, by having their work in private collections.

Joanna Littlejohns, curator and Head of Arts Development for the Guernsey Arts Commission says:
“Informing the concept of this new series of exhibitions entitled COLLECTIONS were questions such as: What does collecting mean? Who are the collectors of 20th & 21st century in the island? What do they have in their collections? The move of the Guernsey Arts Commission’s venue, the greenhouse, to Candie has allowed such a series to be launched. For future years, I am already in discussions to progress COLLECTIONS: Corporate and, for the third year we are thinking of COLLECTIONS: Public.”
The loans for the exhibition are being lent anonymously.

Candie Museum are offering free admission Sunday 6th July from 10:00am – 5:00pm
