The Gardens Bathed by the Sea

2nd Jun - 4th Jun

Between the 2nd - 4th June, discover a musical ambience awaiting you in Candie Gardens, presented by Guernsey Arts.

Candie Gardens, established in 1894, is divided into different sections. The lower gardens were sympathetically refurbished in 1998 and are a great example of classic Victorian gardens.

At the heart of the upper garden, you will find a magnificent statue of Victor Hugo. Unveiled on the 7th July 1914, this was a gift from the French Government dedicated to the “Little People of the Sea” - a thanks for the warm welcome offered by Islanders to the writer during his time spent in exile.

Nearby, you’ll find a beautiful trail, created by the Victor Hugo in Guernsey society, full of plants which pay tribute to the characters created by Victor Hugo.

From the 2nd-4th June, between 10am and 4pm, come with your picnic and enjoy a musical walk in the gardens, with the chance to listen to classical music pieces, which would have been prevalent during Hugo’s stay in Guernsey. Enjoy the panoramic view of the Channel Islands - a breathtaking view of the “Gardens bathed by the sea’, as Hugo put it!

On the 3rd June, between 12 pm and 3pm, the musician Adam Tolcher will enchant you with his compositions for acoustic and electric guitar, inspired by the natural world, as well as by history, art and culture.

On the 4th June, between 2 and 3pm, the Guernsey Street Festival Team will be presenting the island famous choir, GU10, who will entertain you with their nautical programme inspired by sea shanties.
